The winner of Mykaratestore.com's $500 science scholarship was Emily Johnson, a high school student from California.
In her winning essay, titled "The Relationship Between Karate and Cognitive Development," Johnson discussed the ways in which karate can improve cognitive function and boost academic performance.
Johnson plans to use her scholarship to further her studies in mathematics at Stanford University.
"I am thrilled to be receiving this scholarship, especially since I've been training in karate for over five years," Johnson said. "It has not only helped me develop physically but also mentally and emotionally."
