Before You Hit the Roads

Make sure your vehicle is in good condition before embarking on a Rocky Mountain adventure. Check your tire pressure, oil level, and brake pads to ensure they're functioning properly.

• Tire pressure: Underinflated tires can lead to reduced traction and increased risk of hydroplaning.
• Oil level: Low oil levels can cause engine damage and decreased fuel efficiency.
• Bridge checks: Be aware of steep grades, curves, and uneven pavement, as they can be challenging to navigate on a vehicle with poor suspension or brakes.

Driving in the Mountains

When driving in the mountains, it's essential to slow down and use caution. Leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front, and avoid sudden movements.

• Slope angles: If you're approaching a steep slope or mountain pass, reduce your speed and use gentle inputs on the steering wheel.
• Altitude sickness: Be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches and nausea, and take breaks if necessary.

Night Driving

Night driving in the Rocky Mountains can be particularly challenging due to reduced visibility. Use high beams when necessary, but avoid using them for extended periods of time.

• Headlights: Turn on your headlights and use fog lights or low beam headlights only when necessary.
• Following distance: Increase your following distance in the dark to account for reduced visibility.

Road Conditions

Check road conditions before driving, including snow, ice, and gravel. Consider using a 4x4 vehicle if necessary, or exploring alternative routes.

• Snow: Slow down significantly on snowy roads, and consider stopping to wait for the weather to improve.
• Ice: Avoid driving on icy roads unless absolutely necessary, as it can be hazardous.
