Early Life and Career

Oliver Stone was born on July 15, 1946, in New York City. He grew up in a middle-class family with parents who were both artists. Stone's interest in filmmaking began at an early age, influenced by his father, Edward Saxon, a journalist and radio host.

Stone attended the State University of New York at Geneseo, where he studied communications. However, he dropped out to pursue a career in film. He landed his first job as a production assistant on the 1977 film "The Deer Hunter," which earned him critical acclaim and recognition within the industry.

Breakthrough and Awards

Stone's breakthrough film was the 1981 documentary "Platoon," directed by Michael Mann. The film won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Stone.

The success of "Platoon" led to Stone directing several notable films, including "Wall Street" (1987), "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989), and "JFK" (1991). These films cemented Stone's reputation as a provocative and influential filmmaker.
