Welcome to our plumbing tip guide for new houses! In this article, we'll share five essential tips to help you get started on your home improvement journey. From installing pipes to maintaining fixtures, we've got you covered.
Tip #1: Choose the Right Pipe Material
Your choice of pipe material can greatly impact the longevity and functionality of your plumbing system. Copper pipes are a popular choice for new homes due to their durability and resistance to corrosion, but they may not be the best option for everyone. If budget is a concern, consider using PEX or PVC pipes instead.
Tip #2: Install Shutoff Valves Correctly
Proper installation of shutoff valves is crucial to prevent leaks and water damage. Make sure to follow these steps:
- Choose a location that's accessible but not too easy to reach.
- Mount the valve at least 12 inches above the floor or on a wall.
- Make sure the valve is turned clockwise to secure it in place.
Tip #3: Use Drain Guards for Pits and Sinks
Drain guards can help prevent hair, soap scum, and other debris from entering your pipes. Attach them to the bottom of sinks or pits to keep things flowing smoothly.
Tip #4: Check for Loose Connections Regularly
It's essential to regularly inspect your plumbing connections for signs of looseness or corrosion. This will help prevent leaks and water damage in the long run.
Tip #5: Consider Installing a Water Heater Trap
A water heater trap can help prevent mineral buildup and reduce odors in your home's plumbing system. These traps are available for purchase or can be installed by a professional.
