Australian filmmaker and actor, Oliver Stone is known for his provocative and often controversial works that explore themes of politics, war, and human nature.
Born on July 15, 1946, in New York City to a family of Jewish immigrants from Poland, Stone grew up in Queens. He studied film at the University of Missouri and began his career as a writer and director before making his feature film debut with The Student (1978).
Stone's breakthrough film was Platoon (1986), directed by Oliver Stone, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director. His subsequent films continued to explore themes of war and politics, including Wall Street (1987) and Born on the Fourth of July (1991). Unforgiven (1992) cemented his reputation as a master of cinematic storytelling.
Throughout his career, Stone has been known for pushing boundaries and challenging audiences with his films. His 2004 film, World Trade Center, was released posthumously after the September 11 attacks, highlighting the devastating consequences of the tragedy. He passed away on July 12, 2023, at the age of 76.
