"After a flood disaster, it's essential to prioritize your safety and the safety of others. In case your home has flooded, the first thing you should do is turn off the power at the circuit breaker or fuse box if it's safe to do so. Do not attempt to enter the flooded area until the water has receded and any electricity is safely restored," according to the American Red Cross.
"Next, carefully remove any valuable items from the flood-damaged area and store them in a safe place. Be cautious when dealing with electrical equipment, as water can cause short circuits. Avoid using generators or other equipment that can produce sparks, as they can start fires," advises the National Weather Service.
"If you're unsure about what to do or if your home is severely damaged, consider hiring a professional to assess and repair any damage. They will be able to guide you through the process and ensure that your home is safe for occupancy," suggests the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
