Understanding Your Flood Damage
You may be experiencing temporary flooding in your home due to the flood. Take photos of the affected areas and document any water damage. Identify which parts of your home are flooded and what they look like.
Water Damage: What To Do
- Turn off the main water shut-off valve to prevent further damage. Find it near the source of the flood and turn it clockwise.
- Use a wet/dry vacuum or a bucket to remove excess water from carpets, upholstery, and other furniture. Be sure to wear gloves and work in small areas first.
- Tape off any exposed electrical outlets or switches with packing tape to prevent short circuits.
Rebuilding and Repairing Your Home
After assessing the damage, start by drying out your home. Use fans and dehumidifiers to speed up the process. Once dry, you can begin repairing damaged areas.
- Flooding can cause significant damage to structural elements like beams, joists, and walls. Consider hiring a professional to assess and repair any damage.
- Replace flooring, especially if it's been exposed to water for an extended period. Choose water-resistant or waterproof options like porcelain tile or linoleum.
