Preparation is Key
Before the flood, make sure you have a plan in place for emergency situations. Keep a list of emergency contact numbers and a communication device, such as a two-way radio or a cell phone with a backup charger.
Defend Your Home
- Secure any loose outdoor objects that could become projectiles in high winds. Cover your windows and doors with blankets, sheets, or plastic sheets.
- Tighten all the weatherstripping around your doors and windows to prevent water from entering your home.
- Purge your home of wet, heavy items such as books, toys, and decorations that can become waterlogged.
Water Safety
When dealing with flooded areas, be cautious when entering the water. Wear rubber boots or waders to protect your feet from sharp objects and electrical equipment.
Evacuation and Eviction
- If you have pets, evacuate them immediately to a safe location outside the flood zone. Provide your pets with enough food, water, and shelter for at least 24 hours.
- Check if any utility services, such as electricity, gas, or water, are shut off in your area before attempting to access them. Call the local authorities to report the issue.
- If you're staying overnight, consider bringing a tent or emergency shelter with you to provide protection from the elements and potential hazards.
