Tips For Homeowners After A Flooding Disaster

Stop Evacuating If Necessary

Don't rush out of your home if water levels are below your windows. Instead, wait for a professional to assess the situation and provide guidance on what to do next. This could involve taking essential belongings with you or leaving them behind.

1. Carefully assess the damage: Take photos of any structural damage, electrical issues, or water stains to report to your insurance provider.
2. Secure loose items: Protect valuable items like electronics, papers, and medications from further water damage by storing them in a waterproof container.

Unplug Appliances And Electronics

Unplugging sensitive equipment can help prevent power surges that could cause electrical fires. This includes appliances, lamps, and electronic devices.

• Do not attempt to use electrical appliances if water is present in the circuit or if you smell an electric smell.
• Unplug all non-essential electronics and appliances for at least 30 minutes to ensure safe working conditions.

Leave The Building If Necessary (But Don't Jump Out Of Windows)

If you're told to leave your home, don't jump out of a window. This can cause serious injury or even death.

1. Wait for professional guidance: Take cover under a sturdy table or desk and wait for authorities to give the all-clear before exiting.
2. Use a phone or other device to contact emergency services if you need help escaping.
