Tips For Homeowners After A Flooding Disaster - The News Examiner | It Is Vital For New And Current Homeowners To Know What To Do Following A Flood Disaster

Assessing Damage

Flooding can cause extensive damage to your home and belongings. Before attempting repairs, take photos of any damage from high angles for insurance purposes. Identify the source of the flood and document it.

• Check for structural integrity: If water levels are above 12 inches, seek professional help immediately.
• Purge contents: Remove soaked items, including clothing, furniture, and debris.
• Tap into dry areas: Use a shovel or trowel to gently tap at the floor to find any remaining water pockets.

Repairing Your Home

Repairs can be time-consuming and expensive. Prioritize repairs that are essential, such as fixing leaky roofs or installing new flooring.

1. Document all work: Keep records of every repair, including before-and-after photos and receipts.
2. Check local regulations: Familiarize yourself with any homeowners' association (HOA) rules or local building codes that may apply to your situation.
3. Seek professional help: If unsure about a particular task, hire a licensed contractor for guidance.

Protecting Yourself

Floods can also pose health risks. Take precautions to prevent the spread of disease and injury.

• Keep windows and doors closed: Prevent moisture from entering your home through gaps in walls or floors.
• Use fans and dehumidifiers: Maintain a healthy indoor environment by controlling humidity levels.
• Be aware of allergens: Check for mold, mildew, and other hazardous substances that can exacerbate respiratory issues.
