For decades, white was the standard choice for judo uniform colors, but things took a dramatic turn with the introduction of the blue gi. But why did the designers choose blue instead of white? According to an interview with a renowned judoka, the reason lies in the psychological benefits of blue.

"Blue is associated with trust, loyalty, and focus," explains Kenji Fukushima, a former judo champion. "When we wear blue gi, we feel more confident and focused on our training. This is because the color scheme stimulates the brain's default mode network, which helps us to concentrate and block out distractions."

"In contrast, white gi may cause confusion and distraction during competition," Fukushima notes. "It's like wearing a blank slate – we need something that grabs our attention and tells us what we're doing right now. The blue gi does just that."

So, why did the designers decide to switch from white to blue? According to an interview with a senior judo official, it was all about creating a more cohesive and intimidating uniform for the competitors.

"We wanted to create a uniform that would intimidate our opponents," says the official. "The blue gi has a distinctively darker shade than white, which makes it harder to distinguish from the background. This gives us an edge in terms of strategy and tactics during competition."
